“I found divorce papers,” I whispered.
Malachi’s face hardened.
His mother stepped forward. “Tell her the truth, son.”
“What truth?” I demanded.
Malachi pulled me aside.
“Zaria, those papers aren't what you think.”
“Then why does your mother have them?”
He glanced at her.
That single look told me everything.
His mother smiled triumphantly.
“You see? He can't even tell you.”
I grabbed the papers from the cabinet.
“Were you planning to divorce me before our anniversary?”
Malachi reached for my hand.
“No.”
His voice sounded sincere.
But before I could believe him, his mother laughed.
“He's not divorcing you because he loves you.”
I froze.
“Then why?”
She leaned closer.
“Because if you leave him first, you'll take everything.”
My stomach twisted.
Malachi suddenly snapped, “Mother, stop!”
She looked at him.
Then she said quietly, “She deserves to know what you did before the wedding.”
