My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter.
There were photographs inside.
Photographs of me.
Some were taken outside my workplace. Others showed me talking to people I barely remembered.
At the bottom was a handwritten message:
Stay away from my son.
I looked at Travis, expecting anger.
Instead, he looked confused.
“Did you give these to her?” I asked.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He took the photographs from my hands and studied them.
“This isn't right.”
I felt tears burning my eyes. “Your mother wants me gone.”
Travis pulled me into his arms.
“She doesn't get to decide who I love.”
For the first time, I believed we could survive anything.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His mother's voice came through the speaker.
“Travis, if you stay with Tracy, you'll regret it.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
There was silence.
Then she said something that made Travis suddenly go pale.
“She doesn't know what happened before you met her.”
