I turned around.
“What don't I know?”
She looked at Frederick.
He looked terrified.
His mother immediately interrupted.
“Don't listen to her.”
That was enough.
I demanded the truth.
Finally, Frederick confessed.
The affair hadn't started recently.
It had lasted nearly a year.
But that wasn't the worst part.
His mistress had been secretly helping him with a business he'd built using money from our joint savings.
I felt something inside me break.
“You stole from me?”
Frederick reached for my hand.
“I was going to repay you.”
I pulled away.
His mother sighed dramatically.
Then she smiled at the other woman.
“I knew she'd never be the right wife for my son.”
I looked at her.
For the first time, her words didn't hurt.
They clarified everything.
I walked outside and called a lawyer.
But when I opened my car door, someone was waiting beside it.
A man I had never seen before.
He smiled gently.
“Lisa, I think we need to talk.”
