I expected a kiss.
Instead, the woman slapped Walter.
Hard.
I stared through the café window, confused.
She grabbed her purse and stormed away.
Walter remained seated, looking devastated.
When he finally came outside, I confronted him.
“You're cheating on me.”
His face went pale.
“No.”
“Then explain the hotel receipt.”
He looked away.
“My mother told me to meet her.”
“Her?”
“The woman you saw.”
My anger faltered.
Walter reached for my hand.
“She knows something about my mother.”
I pulled away.
“What?”
Before he could answer, his mother appeared behind us.
Her expression changed when she saw me.
“Alice,” she whispered.
Walter stepped between us.
“Tell her the truth.”
His mother stared at me.
Then she smiled.
“You really want to know why I told my son to cheat?”
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
She leaned closer.
“Because your marriage was never supposed to happen.”
