I barely slept.
The next morning, I asked Timmy about his mother's messages.
He became defensive.
“She's just trying to scare you.”
“Why would she mention seven years ago?”
“Stephanie, drop it.”
That answer frightened me more than the message.
I had never met Timmy seven years ago.
So what could possibly involve me?
That afternoon, his mother, Odette, invited me to lunch.
I almost refused.
Instead, I went.
She placed a photograph on the table.
My heart stopped.
It showed me standing beside a young man I hadn't seen in years.
“Who is he?” she asked.
I swallowed.
“My old friend, Callum.”
Odette smiled coldly.
“You told Timmy you barely knew him.”
I stared at the photograph.
Then she slid another picture toward me.
This one showed Callum entering a hospital.
And the date was seven years ago.
