I married Christopher because I believed love meant having someone beside you when the world became exhausting.
But lately, I was learning what it meant to sleep beside someone who was never really there.
Christopher worked long hours. Meetings, deadlines, overtime—there was always something.
“Just one more week, Shelley,” he would promise.
And I always believed him.
One Friday evening, I cooked his favorite meal and waited until midnight.
He never came home.
The next morning, I heard the front door open.
Christopher walked in looking exhausted.
Before I could hug him, another voice came from behind him.
His mother.
She walked past me, looked around my house, and said, “Things certainly need changing around here.”
I stared at her.
Then she smiled.
“After all, this is my son’s home too.”
Something about those words made my stomach tighten.
I just didn’t know yet how much they would change my life.
