I stared at the photograph.
It showed Travis standing beside the woman he had once been engaged to.
She wasn't my twin.
But the resemblance was frightening.
“Who are you?” I asked.
The woman introduced herself as the missing bride's sister.
Then she told us the truth.
Travis's mother had discovered that her daughter had been secretly planning to leave the family because of a terrible secret involving Travis's father.
After the disappearance, Travis's mother blamed herself.
“She thinks history is repeating itself,” the woman said.
“But why me?”
“Because she believes anyone Travis loves will eventually be destroyed by this family.”
Travis stepped closer to me.
“My mother was wrong about one thing.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He took my face gently between his hands.
“You aren't leaving.”
I smiled through my tears.
Then his mother's car stopped outside.
She walked toward us holding a small box.
“I owe you both the truth,” she said.
And when she opened the box, I saw what had started everything.
